Former Apalachicola mayor dies at 74

Roger Newton, a former two-term mayor of Apalachicola, has died.

Newton, 74, passed away surrounded by his family on April 15, 2021 in Panama City.

In the 1980s, he twice served as Apalachicola mayor.

Born in New York, NY, he grew up in Crystal River, and was a businessman and entrepreneur his whole life. He served in the military and spent most of his years in the seafood business, processing seafood for Morrison's Cafe, selling scallops, fish fillets, and crab craws to restaurants, and most recently cannonball jellyfish harvested in Apalachicola Bay to customers in China.

In the last few years he owned a successful painting business and was painting residential and commercial properties in the Panama City area.
He is survived by his wife, Sherri Newton; son Jason Newton (Darcie Langford), daughter Erikka N. Roberts (Eric Roberts), son Blayze Harriman, son Jett Harriman, grandson River Harriman, and his brother Peter Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Mildred Newton and his brother Victor Newton.
