The Franklin County varsity boys soccer team opened their 2021-22 season with an 8-4 victory on the road last week over Jefferson County on Nov. 9.

Coach Bill McCullough’s squad was hoping to make it a second straight win, as they hosted the Tigers Tuesday, Nov. 16.

“It was a great match to start our season,” said McCullough. “Jefferson County has a very talented roster and a strong coach. They will be a challenging opponent from start to finish this season for many teams.

“We took our lumps early in this match,” said the coach. “Our lack of practice time this winter really showed in the early minutes. We gave up our first goal on a quick free kick by Jefferson County. They noticed that we weren’t ready and took advantage. We traded goals for most of the first half and went to the break down 3-2.

“I knew we would have some issues on set pieces and situational awareness moments, simply because we haven’t had the practice time that most programs have had,” McCullough said. “During the half, we made some adjustments and moved two or three guys around to really fit our personnel better.”

The coach said junior Reece Juno and eighth-grader Enrique Dominguez showed that they will be strong anchors for the Seahawk defense this season.

“Junior Esteban Bernabe, junior Luis Ramirez and junior Gideon Dively worked well together to push our offense upfield all night,” McCullough said.

Dively ended the night by scoring six goals. “Gideon is a special breed of player, and he will be a tough matchup for any team we come across,” said the coach.

McCullough said juniors Brayden McCall and Will Luberto, both newcomers, “showed incredible poise and willingness to work hard all night. Freshman goal Keeper Garyson Millender had some strong moments and we look forward to him leading from the net.”

Millender had six saves minding the new, while Ramirez, as well as junior Eugenio Sebastian each scored one goal.
