The Elder Care Community Council next month will be celebrating the silver anniversary of the annual 5K Sizzler Race on St. George Island, and it's looking to really be a hot one.
The race, set for Saturday, August 5 on St. George Island, marks the 25th anniversary of the race, started by Eastpoint veterinarian Dr. Hobson Fulmer, a successful local runner, to provide a running venue for the Franklin County High School cross country team under the auspices of Tate's Hell Track Club.
The Sizzler was organized by and benefited the Franklin County Humane Society until 2018, when the Elder Care Community Council of Franklin Council assumed the organization and sponsorship of the Sizzler as a fundraiser for elder services.
With 2,327 meals being provided at Holy Family every month, the ECCC looks to the Sizzler as a major fundraiser.
Bonnie Kellogg, a member of the ECCC board, said the group is looking for people interested in entering the Sizzler 5K or One-Mile Fun Run as either runners or walkers.
Plus there are opportunities to volunteer at the race, to donate auction items for the online auction, or to be a monetary sponsor.
“We are very excited to be celebrating the 25th year of the Sizzler,” said Mary Stutzman, race director. “We have water available before and after the run as well as two water stations on the course. You are welcomed at the finish with an ice cold washcloth!”
She said this year’s Sizzler is being chip timed by Gulf Winds Track Club, which has it as one of its Grand Prix races, meaning the field should be a large one.
“We encourage walkers as well as runners to participate,” said Stutzman. “This event has only been possible over the years due to the great community and volunteer support that we receive.”
The One Mile Fun Run is at 6:30 p.m. and the 5K Race is at 7 p.m. Registration starts at 4 p.m at Berkshire Hathaway on the island There is a post-race party with BBQ sandwiches. There will be an auction to benefit ECCC starting on August 4. To donate for the auction, text a picture of your item and send it to 850-509-5009, with 100 percent of the funds raised from the Sizzler and the auction going to purchase food for the lunches for seniors in Franklin County.
“So far in 202, 13,173 lunches have been distributed,” Kellogg said. “Please help us feed those people in need in our neighborhoods.”
