It was a relaxed spirit of fun Friday afternoon, as the Franklin County Seahawks varsity football team had an intrasquad spring game.
Coach Dirk Strunk served as the refs, as each team had five plays to see what they could do.
On the White side of the ball assistant principal Jaime Copley was the coach, and on the Balck jersey side, it was the regular coaching staff, with the help of administrator Karen Ward.
Gideon Dively handled kicking suits for both teams, and his foot may well be a factor this season.
The main thing is that the team has dressed about three dozen players, a healthy increase over last season.
‘That's a good number, we were at 27 last year,” said Strunk. “Numbers are up, the attitude is great and the kids are working hard. I;ve been really pleased with this spring.”
The Seahawks lost seven players to graduation and the team is younger, but the coach has faith in the future.
“We’re turning the corner,” he told the teams after the game.”Overall I was pleased with the scrimmage. We have a lot of excitement going into the summer. I can't wait for the season to get here.”
In the post-game huddle, Strunk reminded players of the Summer Workout Schedule.
Varsity’s first session begins Tuesday, May 31, and runs through June 30, every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 a.m.
On June 15, the players will take part in a camp at Florida State.
The second session runs from July 5 to July 28, from 7 to 9 a.m. every weekday except Friday.
For middle school players, the summer program runs from June 14 to July 28, every Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
